I'm thrilled that this second novel in this series, after Instruments of Darkness, gave me another exciting reading experience featuring Mrs. Harriet Westerman and Mr. Gabriel Crowther, two of the most differing sleuths from a personality standpoint you will find since Holmes and Watson. Their personalities would seem at first glance to be so different they could never work together. The fact that they are successful in their investigative efforts is due completely to the fact that author Imogen Robertson has such a wonderful way with character development. In this London of 1781, the government is concerned over the direction the war with France and the American Colonists is taking. Only by having spies well placed can the French possibly know what to expect from the British Naval forces. Mrs. Westerman's husband is in command of one of the British ships and there is a very good opening section of the novel where we see the warfare on the seas from his vantage point. Mrs. Westerman and Crowther are brought into the story to investigate privately the death of a man believed to possibly be a spy. The British Government doesn't want to reveal any interest in the case so Harriet and Crowther agree to act as a kind of smoke screen for the uncovering of an enemy of the country.
It was a pleasure to resume my reading of this series and once again enjoy the vivid historical world created by this talented author. Much of the story takes place around an opera house and the principal singers in a newly written opera. I was not familiar with the history of the castrati in opera so that information added greatly to the feeling of history which permeates this novel. The author has based her story on many true facts and she is kind enough to enlighten the reader about these events in her historical notes following the conclusion of the story.
While I found this novel thoroughly enjoyable, I do feel that it would be best if a reader new to the series would begin their reading adventure of the works of this author with the first book in this series. I think anyone starting their involvement here will be confused by how the main characters relate to each other. I'm afraid that lack of detailed information might leave a reader not understanding how this gathering of people at the house in Berkeley Square came about. I must say I absolutely loved the new characters of Mrs. Bligh, Sam, and Boyo and I hope there will be ways to include them in other novels in the series. The third book is titled Island of Bones and the fourth is Circle of Shadowsto be released in mid 2013. I sincerely hope I will have many more books in this series to look forward to.

Anatomy of Murder (Audible Audio Edition) Imogen Robertson Jenny Sterlin Recorded Books Books Reviews
Another great story from Robertson but sadly filled with cliches (the tarot card reader, the mysterious theatre, the fiery red-head). The main appeal is not the story itself, but rather the writing and beautiful phrasing that leads to clever characterization. Robertson is a master of the single raised eyebrow and other character responses that give far more insight than their own words. Otherwise this novel is a bit predictable.
Good Plot, Well-Written . . . but again, just as in the author's other books, there are just too many characters. If you only have a little time in the evenings to read fiction and want a restful book, this is NOT a good choice. Resist the temptation of buying versions so that you can look back and remember the minor characters and the incidents they are involved in.
This is the second book in the series featuring Harriet Westerman and Gabriel Crowther. I regret that I read the third book before I found this one -- it would be helpful if the titles were numbered or the like. The characters are engaging and continue to develop. There are several story lines which develop simultaneously, which took some concentration to keep straight. At least in the electronic version, formatting did not make it obvious when a shift in the story line occurred.
I loved this book! Great story lines, continues to engage my interest, and the characters are people with whom I can get involved. Each succeeding book is more entertaining. I am waiting eagerly for the 4th one to be available electronically.
The writer assumes that the reader has read the prior volume, which makes for some confusion if you haven’t. Otherwise, it is a well written exercise in 18th century detective fiction.
I am really enjoying this series - just ordered the third one. Robertson does a very good job of setting the scene with historical accuracy without making you think she's just showing off her research. Her secondary characters are almost Dickensian. The independence of Harriet is believable because of her background as a Naval Captain's wife and Crowther is a believable loner learning to fit back into society. The mysteries are believable and you come to care about the ongoing story of the characters - major and minor.
Great characters - very different and interesting. I read the first book in this series and loved it; now I can't wait to get the third. Excellent storyline - really keeps your attention. I love the way Ms. Robertson goes back and forth from wealthy salons to the grime of London's worst streets without missing a beat, and the characters are equally involving. Her language and history background paint a very realistic picture of the times. This is a beautifully written and intriguing series.
I loved the first Crowther and Westerman book, but struggled to get into this story. I cannot put my finger on it, but it seemed to have too much bla bla bla to me. Some scenes were fantastically written and then I would totally lose interest again. All in all still a good murder mystery with its fair share of personal tragedy.
